BROWN TAKES HIS
MAIDEN DURATEC VICTORY
3 November,
2006: Eighteen-year-old David Brown made the most of his debut
at the wheel of a Duratec-powered Formula Ford today, winning the
opening round of the UK Formula Ford Winter Championship at
Silverstone.
Glasgow-based
Brown, who was only last month crowned the 2006 UKFF Scholarship
Champion, annexed pole position in his Kevin Mills Racing-run Van
Diemen and - despite a tardy getaway which cost him two places on
the opening lap - drove superbly to take the win.
Kent youngster
David Mayes led the opening lap in his Ray before Milton
Keynes-based Takashi Nagase took over in front in his Van Diemen.
But the Japanese driver's tenure of the lead lasted only until lap
four, when Brown eased ahead. David was never headed thereafter,
winning by a 2.6-second margin.
There was final-lap
heartbreak for Nagase, a broken gearbox linkage costing him a
certain second place. Finland's Jesse Krohn (Ray) took the
runner-up spot ahead of Mayes, with Jason Down's Getem fourth
ahead of the hobbled Nagase, Scholarship class victor Garry
Findlay and Clubmans Class winner Stuart Kestenbaum.
Graham Carroll and
Mark Williams completed the finishing order. Nick Lay was
sidelined by suspension worries while Matthew Payne was stopped by
a fuel problem.
The Ford-backed
Winter Championship's second round takes place on Sunday at
Silverstone; rounds three and four are next weekend at Brands
Hatch.
